Guidelines for bringing electronic evidence to court

If you are planning on bringing evidence in digital formats to an Austin Municipal Court hearing or trial, the evidence must be presented to the court 48 hours before the scheduled start time and in a format compatible with court technology.

You can bring evidence in:

  • USB flash drive (thumb drive)
  • memory cards: SD, micro SD, or CompactFlash
  • DVD±R, DVD±RW, DVD±DL
  • CD-R, CD-RW
  • BD-R, BD-R DL, BD-RE, BD-RE DL

Please finalize all discs prior to submitting them as evidence.

Acceptable file types:

  • Most common video containers: (AVI, FLV. MOV, MP4, WMV)
  • Most common audio containers: (MP3, MP4a, WMA, WAV)
  • Media Types that are protected are not acceptable (i.e. AAX, MP3P)
  • Most common document types: (CSV, DOC, DOCX, PDF, PPS, PPT, RTF, XLS, XLSX)
  • Most common picture types: (BMP, GIF, JPEG, JPG, PNG, TIF, TIFF)

Unacceptable File Types:

  • Executables (BAT, BIN, CGI, COM, EXE, GADGET, JAR, MSI, PL, PY, WSF)
